Josef Gunther, the stoic ex-Kripo detective from the Bavarian State Police, carried the scars of a divided Germany. Greta, a 38-year-old schoolteacher and daughter of a prominent Bavarian industrialist, had left for a supposed weekend seminar in Frankfurt two weeks earlier and never returned. Her suitcase was found abandoned at the Hauptbahnhof. The official police line leaned toward a simple runaway marriage, but Heinrich insisted something was wrong — their marriage had been strained but not broken, and large withdrawals had been made from their joint account just before she vanished.
Josef worked methodically, as always. He interviewed colleagues at the school, pored over phone records at the post office, and drove his battered Mercedes through the Alps to check mountain guesthouses. A key lead emerged from a border guard near the new eastern zones: a woman matching Greta’s description had been seen with a man carrying East German papers. Digging deeper, Josef uncovered that Greta had been blackmailed over a brief affair years earlier with a Stasi-linked academic. The “missing wife” was actually in hiding, fearing retribution as old files were being opened during reunification.
In a tense confrontation at a foggy lakeside chalet near Starnberg, Josef found Greta, terrified but alive. The man with her was not a lover but a protector helping her escape the blackmailer, who had ties to lingering communist networks. Josef, drawing on his own history of quiet defiance against the old regime, negotiated a resolution: the blackmailer was exposed to the authorities, and Greta returned home. Heinrich never learned the full affair details — Josef’s small mercy. As snow fell on Munich’s Christmas markets, Josef accepted his payment with a curt nod and returned to his office, pouring a glass of schnapps while pondering how the ghosts of the old Germany still haunted the new.
