Nathan Trentham (United Kingdom, London, 1987)

Nathan Trentham (United Kingdom, London, 1987)

Nathan Trentham was a no-nonsense detective in his mid-40s, a former Scotland Yard inspector who had left the force after a messy corruption scandal involving high-ranking officers. Born and raised in working-class East London, he carried the grit of the post-war era and a heavy distrust of institutions. Now operating as a private investigator out of a cramped office above a pub in Soho, he took cases that smelled of money, betrayal, or both. He favored a battered trench coat, endless cups of strong tea, and his old service revolver.

The case started with a frantic call from Eleanor Hargrove, the elegant but anxious wife of a prominent City banker. Her husband, Reginald Hargrove, had vanished two days earlier after leaving for his club. No note, no luggage, and the police were treating it as a possible voluntary disappearance—rich men sometimes cracked under pressure. But Eleanor insisted something was wrong. Nathan took the case, sensing the usual cocktail of money and secrets.

Digging through the mid-80s London underworld, Nathan learned Reginald had been involved in a shady business deal gone bad with a group of East End property developers who had ties to old-school gangsters. The deal involved prime Docklands land that was about to skyrocket in value thanks to the regeneration boom. Nathan tailed leads from smoky gentlemen’s clubs in Mayfair to dingy pubs in Bethnal Green. He discovered Reginald had been skimming money and planning to flee to Spain with a mistress, but the developers had caught wind of it.

In a tense confrontation on a foggy night near the Thames, Nathan cornered one of the enforcers in a warehouse. A brief scuffle left Nathan with a bruised rib, but he extracted the location where they were holding Reginald—alive but roughed up, being pressured to sign over assets. Nathan alerted his remaining contacts at the Yard (off the books), leading to a raid. Reginald was rescued, the developers arrested, and Eleanor got her husband back—minus some dignity and a hefty divorce settlement she promptly filed for once the truth emerged. Nathan collected his fee in crisp notes and returned to his office, pouring another tea while the city lights flickered outside.
