Bat Gan Temujin: “Bike Gang annoying”

Bat Gan Temujin: “Bike Gang annoying”

The call came from a ger district on the western edge of Ulaanbaatar. An older woman named Oyunbileg said a motorcycle club had started using the empty lot behind her family’s compound as a gathering place. They arrived after dark, engines loud, music louder. They left beer cans, tire tracks, and once a broken bottle near her grandson’s play area. The local police had taken a report and done nothing.

Temujin went at dusk. The club called themselves the Iron Wolf Riders. Twelve to fifteen bikes, most Japanese or Chinese copies, a few older Russian machines. The leader was a man in his early thirties named Bold who wore a leather vest with a poorly stitched wolf patch.

Temujin did not raise his voice. He stood at the edge of the lot, hands in the pockets of his coat, and waited until the engines cut. He told Bold, in Mongolian, that the land belonged to the family, that the child slept twenty meters away, and that the next time they came after 9 p.m. he would be there as well.

Bold laughed. Two of the younger riders moved closer. Temujin did not move. He named the registration numbers of three of the bikes he had already photographed. He named the café where two of them worked days. He mentioned, almost casually, that one of the riders still owed money on a stolen catalytic converter from six months earlier.

The laughter stopped.

That night the club did not return. The next night they came earlier, stayed an hour, and left the lot cleaner than they found it. Bold sent a younger member with an apology and a crate of bottled water for the family.

Temujin checked once more a week later. The lot was empty except for the usual wind and dust. He told Oyunbileg the problem was finished unless they came back. She offered him tea. He accepted one cup, then left.

Some gangs only need to be shown that someone is actually watching.
