Bat Gan Temujin — Stolen Car

Bat Gan Temujin — Stolen Car

Bat Gan Temujin still preferred to work on foot when the city allowed it. Ulaanbaatar’s traffic had grown faster than its patience, but the old tracking habits remained: watch the ground, watch the people who watch the ground, never assume a machine has no owner with a story.

The car was a late-model black Land Cruiser taken from a secured lot behind a construction-supply warehouse. The owner, a mid-level contractor named Erdene, claimed it was just a vehicle. Temujin noticed the extra antenna, the aftermarket lock on the glove box, and the fact that Erdene’s voice tightened when he said “just a vehicle.”

The lot camera had a convenient six-minute gap. The night watchman had been paid to look the other way and was now too frightened to say by whom. Temujin did not press him hard. He walked the service alleys instead, reading tire marks in the dust the way his grandfather had read horse tracks on the steppe. Dual rear, slightly worn on the inner edges—driven hard, then parked carefully.

The trail led to a chop-shop on the city’s western fringe that did not advertise. Inside, the Land Cruiser was already being stripped, but the glove box had not yet been forced. Temujin waited until the crew broke for tea, then opened it himself. Inside: not cash, not drugs. A folded set of survey maps and a USB drive holding bid documents for a municipal road contract that Erdene was not supposed to have.

The theft was not about the car. It was about removing evidence before a rival bidder could prove the documents had been copied. The rival had hired local muscle who thought a stolen luxury 4x4 was simpler than a break-in at the warehouse.

Temujin returned the maps and the drive to the anti-corruption unit rather than to Erdene. He left the contractor a single sentence: the steppe does not hide what the wind has already seen. Then he walked back toward the city center, counting the new tire tracks that would appear by morning.
