Josef Gunther (Germany, West Berlin, 1989)
Josef Gunther was a grizzled, methodical detective in his mid-40s, a product of the West German police force with a haunted past. He had grown up in a small Bavarian town but transferred to West Berlin in the 1970s to hunt cross-border smugglers and occasional Stasi operatives. Tall, with a permanent scowl and a preference for strong black coffee and sausages, Josef distrusted politicians and technology alike. The Wall was still standing, but everyone could feel it cracking.
The case landed on his desk in the summer of 1989: a bank robbery at a small branch near Checkpoint Charlie. Three masked men had made off with over 200,000 Deutsche Marks in broad daylight, using military-grade smoke grenades and disabling the alarm system with surprising sophistication. The local Polizei were calling it an inside job, but Josef wasn’t convinced.
Investigating, he discovered the bank manager had gambling debts and a suspicious East German cousin. But something felt off — the robbers moved like they had training, and one of the getaway cars had been reported stolen near the Wall. Josef’s old contacts in the underworld pointed him toward a ring of former soldiers and smugglers who were preparing for the chaos they believed was coming when the East opened up.
After tailing suspects through the neon-lit streets of West Berlin and a tense nighttime stakeout near the Wall, Josef and his team intercepted the robbers during a second planned heist. A shootout left one suspect dead and the others captured. The money was recovered, much of it intended to fund escapes for families wanting to flee East Germany before the inevitable change.
As the leaves fell that autumn and the first cracks in the Wall appeared, Josef sat in his favorite Kneipe, drinking a beer and wondering what the new Germany would bring. For now, at least, one small piece of order had been restored in a city on the brink of history.
