Josef Gunther, the grizzled Kriminalhauptkommissar of the Berlin Kripo, chain-smoked filterless cigarettes in the shadow of the nearly-fallen Wall. Born in 1948 in a bombed-out Hamburg, Josef had grown up in the Wirtschaftswunder years but carried the weight of a divided nation. Practical, methodical, and deeply cynical about both capitalism and communism, he trusted evidence over ideology. The early 90s were chaotic—Ossis flooding in, old Stasi files leaking, and crime spiking as borders blurred.
The Volksbank on Kurfürstendamm had been hit at closing time. Three masked men, precise and professional, made off with over 2 million Deutsche Marks in cash and bearer bonds. No shots fired, but the security guard was left unconscious. Witnesses described East German accents and military bearing. Josef’s team found the getaway car—a stolen Trabant—torched near Checkpoint Charlie.
While younger detectives chased flashy leads, Josef focused on the details: the robbers knew the exact timing of the new alarm system upgrade and the guard’s bathroom break schedule. He pulled files on recently released prisoners and cross-referenced with old Stasi informants now working both sides of the law. A breakthrough came from a nervous bank teller who recognized one robber’s voice from a construction site where many ex-GDR workers were employed.
Josef tracked the crew to a half-abandoned apartment block in Prenzlauer Berg. A tense raid followed—Josef kicking in the door with his Walther P5 drawn, shouting “Polizei!” amid the smell of cheap Eastern cigarettes and boiled cabbage. The ringleader, a former Volkspolizei officer bitter about reunification and lost status, had planned the heist to fund a new life in the West. They recovered most of the money hidden under floorboards.
